Our supplier is Brazos Electric Power Cooperative and they receive 39% of their power from natural gas plants, 2% from hydro plants, 8% from coal plants and the remaining 51% from the market. 48% of the market power is from natural gas plants.
Our rate per kWh is a fixed amount each month (.0652), however, the power cost recovery factor (power cost adjustment) varies each month based on the cost of fuel. Our rates allow us to recover this cost for fuel, however we are not allowed to profit from this cost. This is passed directly to the current customers. Your amount per kWh is always the same each month, only the power cost adjustment changes.
Below is an article from the Public Utility Commission on fuel adjustments. This explains how the fuel cost is added to investor owned utilities. For cooperatives, the fuel cost is done on a monthly basis instead of per year. To minimize the impact of this charge on our members, every attempt is made to "level" the PCRF monthly, rather than to pass on the sometimes extreme monthly fluctuations from our wholesale supplier. However, significant changes in fuel charges may make it necessary to adjust the PCRF more dramatically.
