Green @ Heart
As a member of Heart of Texas Electric Cooperative, you now have the opportunity to support "green power" - electricity produced from renewable energy resources such as wind, solar, hydro, and biomass. Green power is more environmentally friendly but often costs more to produce than power from traditional fuel sources such as coal.
On May 9, 2000, the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUC) established a Renewable Energy Credits Trading Program to encourage construction of generating capacity in Texas using renewable energy technologies. According to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) protocols, "A Renewable Energy Credit (REC) is a tradable instrument that attributes associated with one megawatt hour (1,000 kilowatt-hours) of production from a certified renewable generator."
Based on member participation, HOTEC is offering to purchase Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) available as a result of the ERCOT trading program. By your voluntary participation in this program, you can support Texas renewable generation.
HOTEC is offering subscription blocks of 100 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per month at $1.25 per block. You may choose to purchase as many blocks of energy as you want. Your monthly invoices will include the total cost of renewable blocks purchased each month in addition to the actual kWh usage at the applicable tariff rate. You may cancel your subscription to purchase the 100 kWh blocks of energy at any time.
Money collected by HOTEC will be used to purchase RECs. Heart of Texas will purchase the RECs and immediately retire the credits. By purchasing the RECs, members will be supporting green power.
